7 WAYS TO SAY YES IN FRENCH
Bonjour !
Today, we’ll be looking into a very interesting everyday word -“YES“. When communicating in French, saying “yes” is essential. But did you know there are many ways to express agreement in French? Let’s see 7 different ways to say “yes” in French:
1. Oui (pronounced “wee”) This is the most common and straightforward way to say “yes“
For example: Veux-tu aller au cinéma ? (Do you want to go to the movies?) “Oui, je veux bien.” (Yes, I’d love to.)
2. D’accord (pronounced ” da-kor”) This way of saying “Yes”, is used to show agreement or confirmation.
For example: On se retrouve à 18 heures ? (Shall we meet at 6pm?) “D’accord, à tout à l’heure.” (Agreed, see you later.)
3. Oui, bien sûr (pronounced as ” wee, bee-an-soor”) – which means “of course”, implies a sense of obviousness or certainty.
For example: Pouvez-vous m’aider avec cette tâche ? (Can you help me with this task?) “Oui, bien sûr, je suis là pour vous aider.” (Yes, of course, I am here to help you.)
4. Évidemment (meaning obviously, is pronounced as ” eh-vid-mon”) – This is another way of expressing the “Yes” word. It is used to show strong agreement.
For example: C’est une belle journée, n’est-ce pas ? (It’s a beautiful day, isn’t it?) “Évidemment, le soleil brille !” (Obviously, the sun is shining!)
5. Si (pronounced “see”). This is another way of showing agreement, however, it is used to respond/agree to a negative statement.
For example: Tu ne viens pas ? (Are you not coming?) Si je viens (of course, i’m coming)
6. C’est vrai (That’s true) – This is simply used to confirm a statement.
For example: Il fait froid aujourd’hui, n’est-ce pas ? (It’s cold today, isn’t it?) “C’est vrai, je vais aller chercher mon manteau. (That’s true, I’ll go get my coat.)
7. Absolument (pronounced “ab-so- lu- mahn”). This means absolutely and it emphasizes strong agreement.
For example : C’est un excellent restaurant, n’est-ce pas ? (It’s an excellent restaurant, isn’t it?) “Absolument, j’y vais tous les mois.” (Absolutely, I go there every month.)
